What is Paulownia (Pao-Tong, Empress tree, Princess tree)?

The genus Paulownia is represented by 9 species of fast growing timber trees, which are native to China. It is very adaptable, widely distributed and extremely fast growing both in brown forest soils in temperate zones, yellow soils in subtropical zones, and a pH as low as 3-5. Under normal conditions, a 10-year old Paulownia tree can measure 40cm DBH and will have a timber volume of 0.5 m3. (Picture 1)

Chinese people have been planting Paulownia trees for many centuries. The earliest record of Paulownia can be seen in a book published 400 B.C. “A Monograph of Paulownia” was published in 1049 B.C., recorded the method of cultivation and utilization of Paulownia.

Why we plant Paulownia?
 Provide high quality timbers in a short term; (picture 2)

 The large canopy makes it the best choice for shelter belts of wind breaking, sand breaking, soil and water conservation; (picture 3)

 Deep-root system makes it the best choice for intercropping with crops, bamboos, teas and so on; (picture 4)

 The best choice for soil improvement because the leaves and flowers of Paulownia are rich in nitrogen and therefore serve as good fertilizer and fodder; (picture 5)

 The best choice for gardening by the colorful and beautiful flowers in spring A valuable source of honey.
 Provide shade and habitat for human and animals;

 One acre of Paulownia plantation can absorb 13 tons of COX, SOX, NOX and dusts annually.

Why we choose Paulownia timber?
 Lightweight It weighs an average of 14 to 19 lbs per cubic foot (almost 1/3 the weight of Oak (44 lbs p/cubic ft) and half the weight of Pine (30 lbs p/cubic ft)).
 Strength One of the highest strength to weight ratios of any wood (MOR (psi) is 5740).
 Workability Paulownia has been widely used in the orient for fine furniture, musical instruments, and carvings and decorative finishes for over 2000 years. It can be peeled for veneer in 1/16-inch thickness and has even been sliced at 1/32 inch. (PIC)
 Stability Air-drying takes as little as 30 days. Reported shrinkage from green to oven-dry is only 2.2% radial and 4.0% tangential.
 Conductivity Its ignition temperature is about 400 Cºthat is almost twice many conventional American hard and soft woods.
 Attractiveness It stains well with a variety of colors and can be made to mimic other woods. Once planed a silky luster is revealed. The feel is also very silky.
 Anti-insects Paulownia has strong resistance against white ant, the best choice for using indoors or outdoors in tropical areas.

Why co-operate with us?
 We are the only national research institute focus on Paulownia;
 We have developed comprehensive technologies covered Paulownia breeding, cultivation, plantation, and pest control;
 We preserve all Paulownia new clones, hybrids and cultivars;
